Amber was my heart horse. She’s the first Fjord I purchased while breaking free from family abuse. We had so many grand adventures, and she produced some outstanding Fjords for us. In the above photo, Hubby is riding Amber and baby Gylda is following behind.

Amber was imported from Canada and had a classic drafty build, calm and trusting temperament, was a trustworthy mount for inexperienced riders, and had an excellent work ethic.
Amber’s pedigree is here.

Amber was free-leased, with Brita (following in this pic) to a family for their daycare to provide pony rides, and both mares were phenomenal in this role. They were both pregnant, and continued their role in my herd as broodmares while letting local kids learn to love the breed, and horses in general.

Amber loved being a mother and produced wonderful foals for us and other people.
Amber’s daughters with Valea’s Vesle have continued her line in our herd. We have Bekke, with her daughter Ilsa (by Hunter), and Gylda, with her daughter Febra (by Hunter). Vesle also sired my favorite riding horse, our stallion 1dr Ragnvald, out of a different mare.

One outing that really sealed my love of this mare was to the Gypsum Hills, in Barber County, Kansas, with the Brunson family and friends. That landscape is one of red clay soil over deep gypsum deposits with caves eroded by rainwater over the eons, and dense red cedar invasion of shortgrass prairie, that obliterated views of precipitous cliff faces and any landmarks to help a person orient. We rode out into that landscape, with Laurie on Brita, and me on Amber, following deer trails and marveling at the beauty of all around us. As the daylight was starting to fade, we turned to head back to the trailer. I quickly realized that I didn’t know which trails to follow back. I kept trying different routes, and as I did, Amber started showing me irritation, becoming increasingly resistant to going down some paths. I noticed this, and after explaining what I was experiencing to Laurie, I suggested that we let Amber show us where she wanted to go. Laurie agreed, and I set the reins down, and Amber marched us on a direct route back to the trailer. We would have been lost for days out there if not for that mare.

Amber was a beauty, with loads of long hair. Her mane was so thick that it needed to be kept short or it would literally become a floppy bush. Many of her offspring have that thick hair trait.

Amber was trained to drive and used to haul bales, here as a 2 year old with Lila in 2002, by Darren and Janet Severson, in Saskatchewan, Canada, before she was imported to the USA. Photos by the Seversons.
