• Maggie Lane’s Brita

I bought Brita in 2008 to be a broodmare in our herd, but her temperament was so outstanding that I offered her on a free-lease to a local family to use for pony rides and as a therapy horse for an autistic child. Brita excelled at both uses simultaneously.

Brita knew when she had inexperienced riders or people on her back or in her presence. She was super careful with them and would do whatever they asked. She wasn’t trained to do this; it was just her nature.

Mason Medlam had autism and simply loved riding Brita, and she loved him and his family. Sadly, Mason passed away at 4 years old. You can read more about him here.

    Brita’s pedigree is here.

Brita was a dark brown dun mare that carried one copy of grey (recessive Agouti, Aa). I was delighted when her color test results came back with this result. There had been no grey Fjords in her background for 7 prior generations, so this recessive allele was passed along silently all that time. Many of the first grey genetics that our herd has produced over the years can trace back to Brita. Her granddaughter Elinor has produced 3 grey colts, and her granddaughter Koryn has produced 2 grey colts.

Brita was one of those steady Fjords that didn’t mind humans just hopping on for a ride while she grazed or went about her normal daily activities. Here I’m riding her in 2008.

Brita was also a great driving mare. She’s the dark colored one on the left in this photo

    She was a beautiful mare.
